The Associate of Sciences degree in Psychology is intended to provide students with a clear path to completing the core curriculum as well as a base of Psychology and appropriate science courses that are transferable to four-year institutions. Students who plan to transfer and continue their study of Psychology at a four-year institution should refer to the catalog of the institution to which they plan to transfer and consult with a full-time MCC Psychology instructor.

Marketable Skills

1. Literacy - reading comprehension, business writing, analytical writing, scientific writing.

2. Numeracy - interpret data summaries, understand probability statements, familiarity with basic statistical procedures and processes.

3. Computer literacy - word processing, spreadsheets, data analysis, information organization.

4. Information-finding skills - ability to research relevant literature, assess validity of claims, and make effective comparisons and conclusions.

5. Research skills - experimental and observational methods, survey and sampling techniques, quantitative and qualitative analysis.

6. Measurement skills - understanding how to operationalize the measurement of complex processes, the principles of psychometric measurement, questionnaire design and how to develop other measurement tools.

7. Environmental awareness - Knowing how someone's environment can influence their behavior and vice versa.

8. Intrapersonal awareness - knowing how the environment and behavior interact with internal processes such as cognitions and emotions.

9. Interpersonal awareness - knowing social communication and the potential sources of interpersonal conflict.

10. Problem-solving skills/ Critical evaluation/ Perspective /Higher-order analysis - consistent and effective ability to think and process information.

11. Pragmatism - understanding the importance and flexibility of practicality.

Students who are TSI exempt or must complete one section of developmental education should enroll in PSYC 1100. All other first-time-in-college students should enroll in PSYC 1300.
